CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Middle School Basketball Championship was delayed on Friday after hundreds of attendees were locked out of the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) at the University of Illinois due to a staffing issue. The tournament, designed to provide 4th-8th grade players with a March Madness-style experience, was scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. However, all games were abruptly canceled when organizers realized they had not secured the necessary medical personnel to safely operate the event.
Shortly after 6 p.m., University of Police officers arrived at the scene to assess the situation. By then, organizers had posted a notice on the ARC’s window explaining that the event would not proceed until the required medical personnel were on site. The note apologized for the inconvenience and directed attendees to reach out to the National Middle School Basketball Championships for more information.
Despite the delay, the championships are set to resume on Saturday, with games scheduled from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organizers have assured the public that there are no plans to extend games into Monday, and no further changes to the tipoff times are expected.
This year’s tournament, which marks the eighth year of the event, is projected to generate $2 million in revenue in Champaign County. Hundreds of boys and girls from across the state are participating, with many still hopeful the remaining games will run smoothly this weekend. For additional updates, attendees are encouraged to check the Illinois State Basketball Championship website.
