CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Illinois freshman Will Riley was named Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, the conference announced earlier today. Riley had an impressive college debut, and earned a spot in the starting lineup during the Illini’s three-game win streak. He finished the regular season ranking third in scoring (12.2 points), third in assists (2.3), third in free throws made (75), and fourth in 3-point field goals made (41). ESPN projects Riley as a potential first-round draft pick.
Underwood praised Riley’s development, stating, “We’re putting him in a lot of actions. He’s really comfortable knowing all the actions and I think he’s really confident. We all know he’s a gifted scorer.” Purdue coach Matt Painter also highlighted Riley’s versatility, saying, “Will Riley is just a real tough matchup for anybody with his size and his skill level.”
Riley’s honor marks just the second time an Illinois player has earned Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year since the award’s inception in 2006. He is the second Illini freshman in five years to win the honor, joining Andre Curbelo.
Looking ahead, Illinois earned the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will face the winner of Wednesday’s Ohio State vs. Iowa game on Thursday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Illinois enters the postseason having won three straight games.
