DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – The Danville School District has launched a new initiative to support families experiencing hardships, including homelessness. A brand-new laundry room, located inside Mark Denman Elementary School, is now available for families in need, offering free access to washing and drying facilities to help students attend school with clean clothes.

The idea was first proposed to the school board a year ago, and after careful planning, the facility is now open for use. The laundry room is equipped with three combo washers and dryers, along with free detergent and other supplies. It was made possible through a federal grant from the McKinney Vento American Rescue Plan, with nearly $35,000 invested in the project. Over 230 students in the district are currently experiencing homelessness, many of whom face challenges like living with relatives or moving between homes.

Families who wish to use the laundry room must make an appointment through their child’s school. The space is staffed to provide assistance with the high-tech machines if needed.

In addition to laundry services, the room features a resource board with job opportunities for families. The district hopes this new resource will continue to support families in need, ensuring students can focus on their education without the added stress of unmet basic needs.
