CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Every year, many people take the opportunity to clean out their closets and get rid of old books, decorations, and other items as the weather warms up. This year, Champaign County residents can take part in a new recycling initiative to dispose of old electronics such as TVs, microwaves, holiday string lights, and more.

Online registration for the Spring Residential Electronics Collection event opens on April 1. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation email or text, followed by a postcard that will serve as a “ticket” to the event. This postcard will be sent to residents within 10-14 days of the event.

The collection event will take place on May 17 from 8 a.m. to noon at Parkland College, and is hosted by Champaign County, the City of Champaign, the City of Urbana, and the Village of Savoy.

On the day of the event, participants are advised to use the Duncan Road Entrance into Parkland College and follow the red signs to the collection site. A map will also be provided with the postcard for ease of navigation.

Accepted items include, but are not limited to:

  • TVs (all types, sizes, & shapes)

  • Computers

  • Laptops

  • Tablets, iPads, Kindles

  • Monitors

  • Printers

  • Microwaves

  • Holiday string lights

  • All phones & phone accessories

However, some items will not be accepted, including wooden stereo speakers or speaker cabinets, CDs, DVDs, AC units, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators.
