CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) – The renovations on the Scott M. Bennett Administrative Center, formerly known as County Plaza, are nearing completion, and county offices are preparing to relocate into the newly renovated facility. The County purchased the building in 2022 and began renovations in 2023.
County Executive Steve Summers expressed excitement about the move, highlighting the positive impact it will have on downtown Urbana’s economic development. “Not only are we contributing to the economic development of the city, but we are providing our staff and visitors with a professional, accommodating, and accessible environment to work and conduct County business,” Summers said.
The move is set to take place in stages over the next four months to minimize disruptions to public services. Departments will relocate individually, starting with the County Executive’s Office in April 2025, followed by the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management Agency, and other departments through the summer. A real-time page will be available on the County website to help the public stay informed about the moving schedule.
Champaign County residents are encouraged to check the website before visiting offices to confirm their location during the transition. Additionally, while the first installment of property taxes is due June 2, 2025, in-person payments will continue to be processed at the Brookens Administrative Center until the end of June.
The Sheriff’s Office is looking forward to better serving residents with enhanced communication and technology once they are settled into their new facilities. Sheriff Dustin Heuerman shared his enthusiasm for the move, emphasizing how it will improve both internal operations and services to the public.
A formal dedication ceremony will be planned in honor of the late state Senator Scott Bennett, whose name now adorns the new building. “Senator Bennett was committed to improving his community through public service, and we are honored to have a county building named after him,” said Champaign County Board Chair Jen Locke.
