URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – When Albin Selimi reopened his family’s longtime restaurant under a new name and fresh identity, he didn’t anticipate just how quickly the community would embrace it. Formerly known as Urbana Gardens, the restaurant is now Maple & Yolk, and it’s drawing crowds — with 1,500 patrons on weekends alone.

“We’ve been part of this community for more than 30 years,” said Selimi, whose father started Urbana Gardens. “When we made the decision to evolve the restaurant, we weren’t sure how people would respond — but the support has been overwhelming.”

The redesign and rebranding were accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as an idea to “freshen up the décor” became a complete transformation inspired by visits to larger cities and current food trends. The result is a brunch-forward, cozy yet modern space featuring avocado toast, hearty meat and egg meals, vegetarian skillets, pancakes, and soon — gluten-free French toast.

“People have been amazing,” said Selimi. “We’re seeing familiar faces who’ve been coming here since it was Urbana Gardens, and we’re also seeing a whole new crowd. That combination means a lot to us.”

One of the biggest hits has been the juice and coffee bar, featuring Lavazza coffee and freshly made mimosas — a brunch staple that has quickly become a favorite. Though Maple & Yolk has shorter, more concentrated hours than its predecessor — open until 3 p.m. daily — that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a weekend hotspot.

Selimi credits their success largely to the power of social media and community word-of-mouth. “We didn’t do any big marketing push,” he said. “People started coming in, sharing their experience online, leaving great reviews — and it just snowballed. We’re really grateful.”

With the student population expected to dip for the summer, Selimi remains optimistic. “We have a lot of regulars who aren’t students — just folks from around town who love good food.”
