CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) – As Independence Day approaches, the American Red Cross is urging residents to prioritize safety while celebrating the holiday, especially when using fireworks or spending time in or near water. Alongside its seasonal safety campaign, Red Cross volunteers responded to two residential fires in Urbana and Peoria over the past week, providing critical aid to 13 individuals affected.

Victims received emergency assistance, including essential supplies, health and mental health support, and one-on-one recovery services to help them begin rebuilding their lives. The Red Cross is reminding the public that anyone impacted by a home fire or local disaster can call 800-RED-CROSS for immediate help.

In anticipation of Fourth of July festivities, the Red Cross emphasized that attending professional fireworks displays is the safest option. For those using fireworks at home, safety tips include keeping water nearby, never allowing children to handle fireworks, and protecting pets from loud noises and potential trauma.

Water safety is also a key concern this holiday. The Red Cross advises constant supervision of swimmers, avoiding distractions near water, and encouraging all family members to learn to swim. At beaches, people should swim only in lifeguard-protected areas and be cautious of dangerous rip currents.

The Red Cross offers several free tools and resources, including its Emergency and First Aid apps, as well as online classes in water safety and CPR. Visit redcross.org for more information.
