CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and hundreds of agencies across the state in a focused effort to reduce speeding, as Speed Awareness Day approaches on July 23.

First launched in 2016, Speed Awareness Day is a statewide traffic safety initiative designed to encourage drivers to slow down and make roadways safer for everyone. This year’s campaign will include increased law enforcement visibility and traffic stops along high-traffic routes throughout Champaign.

“The time you save by speeding is not worth the risk you pose to yourself and others on the road,” said Champaign Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “Champaign Police will continue to promote a visible traffic enforcement presence on Speed Awareness Day, reminding drivers that speeding catches up with you.”

Throughout the day, officers will issue citations and warnings where appropriate, with a strong focus on arterial roadways. The effort is aimed at reducing crashes, preventing injuries, and ultimately saving lives.

This initiative is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
