CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The City of Champaign has received court approval to vacate and secure the Champaign Park Apartments, a complex long plagued by structural and safety issues. The decision comes after the buildings were officially condemned in June due to severe deterioration and hazardous living conditions.
Neighborhood Services Director Rob Kowalski said the court previously ordered the property owner to relocate the estimated 100 residents and secure the premises, but the order was not carried out. As a result, the city has been granted the authority to intervene directly.
The city, in coordination with Cunningham Township, is working to provide personalized support to affected residents. “It was really just individual case management,” said Kowalski. “Everybody has different needs — whether it’s help with a security deposit or providing a reference.”
As part of the court order, the city will block vehicle access to the property, except for emergency responders, and seal off building entrances. The relocation process is expected to begin within a week and be completed by next month.
City officials urge residents to reach out if they need assistance with the transition.
