CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – With heat index values forecasted to soar between 105 and 112 degrees throughout the week, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) is warning residents of the serious health risks posed by extreme heat. The highest temperatures are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with little overnight relief as lows only drop to the mid-70s.

CUPHD urges residents to watch for signs of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can become life-threatening if untreated. Symptoms include a body temperature above 103°F, red or dry skin, rapid pulse, dizziness, confusion, nausea, and lack of perspiration.

To stay safe, officials advise the public to stay hydrated with non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drinks, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, wear light-colored, breathable clothing, and use air-conditioned spaces. Individuals are also reminded never to leave children, elderly adults, or pets in parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly and become fatal.

To assist vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness, CUPHD, in partnership with Cunningham Township, Strides Shelter, and The Salvation Army of Champaign, has opened a temporary 24-hour emergency shelter from July 20 to July 26. Individuals must first complete an intake at Strides Shelter between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. before accessing transportation to the shelter.

Several public cooling centers are open throughout the area, including CUPHD, Lincoln Square Mall, Market Place Mall, and various park district facilities. A full list is available through the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency.

CUPHD, a kid-friendly cooling site, offers air conditioning, Wi-Fi, television, books, and free meals for children as part of the summer meals program (July 25–August 11, weekdays only).

All residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, especially the elderly, disabled, and those without access to cooling. Visit Champaign County EMA or Ready Illinois for more information.
