DANVILLE, IL – (Chambana Today) – For more than three decades Community members, with the City of Danville have been hosting an annual event that started out as a means to bring people of different cultures together.

“Things first started about 30 years ago as Community Day and last year we decided to honor Mary Thompson,” said Rheanna Ollis, Community Relations Administrator at the City of Danville. “She was super involved with the community in Danville and our Human Relations Commission. This was just a great way to honor her since she was always part of everything community related.”

July 27 will mark the 31st annual event at Lincoln Park from 2-4 p.m. and will offer the community a chance to get together and get to know each other. Activities include a free meal with BBQ, hamburgers, hot dogs and chips. About 350 meals will be prepared. Food is provided by the City of Danville, with Barbeque by Kags BBQ. Entertainment is provided by Candy Foster and the Shades of Blue Jazz music.

The Danville Police & Fire Departments will be on hand to meet the public and a Fire truck will be there for youngsters to check-out and will spray water for them to cool off and play in.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to get out and meet others and have a meet and greet with city aldermen and police and fire crews,” Ollis said. “It’s a great way to get the community together, even though it started out as a way to make the black community to feel welcomed, it has now grown to be something that brings everyone together and know who’s on the team.”
