SAVOY, IL (Chambana Today) – Community leaders from across East-Central Illinois gathered Thursday to celebrate a major milestone for Champaign County Crime Stoppers, as the organization marked its 39th year of service in crime prevention and community engagement.

Roughly 50 people attended the annual recognition luncheon, held in Savoy, where several awards were handed out for outstanding contributions to public safety and community support. Among those honored was Minnie Pearson, president of the Champaign County NAACP, who made history as the first African American woman and first NAACP member to receive the prestigious Dave Benton Crime Fighter of the Year Award.

Champaign Police Chief Timothy Tyler, who nominated Pearson for the award, praised her as a consistent advocate for justice and unity.

Pearson has served in the NAACP for more than 12 years, continuing a legacy of civic engagement inspired by her father. She emphasized that improving public safety starts with listening and mutual respect.

Crime Stoppers’ impact over the past year was also highlighted: 55 arrests, 48 cleared cases, and 25 weapons recovered since January of last year.

Champaign County Crime Stoppers continues to encourage residents to share anonymous tips by phone, online, or through the P3 Tips app. Rewards of up to $5,000 are available for information leading to arrests in felony cases.
