CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department has released the results of its participation in the statewide Speed Awareness Day, held on July 23, aiming to reduce dangerous driving behavior on local roads.
Partnering with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 law enforcement agencies across the state, Champaign Police committed to a high-visibility traffic enforcement campaign targeting speeders and other traffic violations.
“Every day, Champaign Police join our partners across Illinois in keeping our roads safe for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists,” said Champaign Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “The joint focus of Speed Awareness Day helped to keep our communities safe from speeding and the real harm it can cause.”
Over the course of 53 dedicated enforcement hours, officers concentrated on arterial routes, especially those near residential neighborhoods. Their efforts resulted in a total of 80 traffic stops, including:
- 40 speeding citations
- 7 expired registration violations
- 5 citations for driving without insurance
- 4 citations for operating a vehicle without a valid license
- 4 moving violations, including failure to signal and running stop signs
- 1 distracted driving citation
- 19 traffic warnings
- 2 arrests for outstanding warrants
The Speed Awareness Day initiative was supported by federal traffic safety funds and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Officials hope the campaign reinforces the importance of safe driving habits and deters dangerous behaviors like speeding in the future.
