URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Mayor DeShawn Williams released a statement this week distancing the City of Urbana from a social media post allegedly made by a city employee, calling the content “incendiary” and emphasizing that it does not reflect the city’s views.
According to the mayor, the post in question was made from the employee’s personal account and came to the city’s attention on Tuesday. While no details about the post’s specific content were disclosed, the statement confirmed it referenced recent events in Utah, which the city formally condemned.
“The City of Urbana was not involved in the creation of the post and was not aware of the employee’s intent to post it,” Mayor Williams stated. “The post is in no way representative of the City’s views.”
The mayor also reaffirmed the city’s support for free speech while clarifying that the employee was acting as a private citizen at the time of the post. City officials have not announced whether the employee will face disciplinary action.
Mayor Williams concluded by reinforcing Urbana’s commitment to community standards and public accountability. “The City condemns the actions of any persons involved in the events in Utah,” the statement reads.
