CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Salvation Army of Champaign County’s food pantry is in urgent need of food and monetary donations, and volunteers to meet the sharp increase in the need for food access. In October, the pantry served 5,488 people. In recent days, the food pantry has seen a 50% increase in visitors, and on Thursday sent out a release asking the community for help.

How People Can Help

Volunteering: In as little as one hour per week or a full day, volunteers can make a difference by helping the pantry serve more people. Volunteers can choose tasks that best fit their time and abilities. Needs include packing bags, stocking pantry shelves, loading carts, answering the phone, and data entry. Volunteers are needed Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center, 2212 N. Market St., Champaign, IL.  Contact 217-373-7832 to learn more about volunteering at the food pantry.

Donating Food: Food donations are a way to help restock the shelves fast. Helpful food items include canned vegetables and beans, peanut butter, meat, eggs, cheese, and other protein sources. Food can be delivered to The Salvation Army Red Shield Center, 2212 N. Market St., Champaign, IL from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Making Financial Contributions: Financial donations help The Salvation Army purchase food in bulk, making each dollar stretch farther and serve more people. Donations can be made online at SAchampaign.org. All dollars stay local and help provide meals to our neighbors in Champaign County.
