CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The City of Champaign’s Public Works Director has declared that the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirement is now in effect for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas following an overnight snowfall of at least two inches.

Under city ordinance, property owners have 24 hours from the time of declaration to clear their sidewalks. The compliance period began at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, meaning sidewalks must be cleared by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Sidewalks must have a clear path the width of the walk or 48 inches, whichever is less, and corner properties must also clear access ramps. Failure to comply may result in the City clearing sidewalks at the owner’s expense.

Residents and businesses are reminded not to push snow into city streets, as it creates hazards for drivers. All residents are also encouraged to clear sidewalks, especially along Safe Routes to School, to ensure safe passage for students and pedestrians.
