CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Community leaders, families and supporters gathered Tuesday on Sangamon Drive as JB Pritzker joined local officials for the groundbreaking of a new inclusive playground designed to serve children of all abilities in the Champaign-Urbana community.
Organizers described the project as more than just a playground, calling it a future gathering place where children can build friendships, discover new abilities and feel a sense of belonging.
“Today is a very special day for the children and community of Champaign-Urbana as we break ground on a playground and a community fixture — a place where children of all abilities can come together to form connections and discover new capabilities,” Governor Pritzker said before the groundbreaking.
The planned playground will feature accessible equipment and design elements intended to ensure children with physical, developmental and sensory disabilities can safely play alongside their peers. Supporters said the project reflects a growing commitment in the community to inclusion and equal access to recreational opportunities.
Governor Pritzker praised the effort as an investment in both families and the future of the community, emphasizing the importance of creating public spaces where every child feels welcome.
Local leaders said the playground will provide opportunities for social development, physical activity and community engagement for years to come. Construction is expected to begin soon following Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony.
