CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The American Red Cross is in the midst of a national blood emergency, further exacerbated by the aftermath of Hurricane Debby and severe weather events across the country. The organization is urging those in unaffected areas to schedule an appointment to donate blood immediately.

In recent weeks, the challenging weather conditions have intensified the summer downturn in blood donations. Nearly 60 blood drives have been canceled nationwide, many due to the impacts of Hurricane Debby, resulting in approximately 1,500 lifesaving blood products going uncollected. Annually, extreme weather conditions such as blizzards, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes disrupt around 90,000 blood donations to the Red Cross.

To ensure that vital medical procedures are not delayed or halted, the Red Cross is appealing to both new and regular donors to come forward and help rebuild the blood supply. During September, which is National Preparedness Month, the Red Cross emphasizes the importance of a robust blood supply for disaster preparedness and medical emergencies.

Donors who give blood between September 1-15 will receive an exclusive Red Cross t-shirt, while supplies last. Those who donate by August 31 will also get a $20 Amazon.com Gift Card via email as a token of appreciation. To schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross blood donor app, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). For detailed information, visit RedCrossBlood.org/Help.
