Champaign-Urbana, IL (Chambana Today) – An Illinois statute to give workers and students at the University of Illinois election day off as a paid holiday was not renewed. A section of the State Universities Civil Service Act is in charge of designating state and national holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving as paid holidays each year for employees at state universities.
An amendment designated November 3, 2020, as a state holiday, and a similar one designated November. 8, 2022 as another state election holiday. No such amendment was written for November 5, 2024, so the UI employees and students will attend classes and work as usual.
The UI will give up to two hours of paid leave for people to vote in special circumstances.
Early voting and registration on campus starts on October 21 at the Illini Union and runs through November 5. To vote on campus, students need their student ID as well as proof of address.
