CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Mahomet-Seymour residents will be asked if they support a tax referendum to renovate and build new schools to keep up with their expanding population. The $112.8 million tax relief would help build two new buildings, demolish the current junior high, and upgrade other existing buildings.
One building would go behind Middletown Prairie Elementary and house second and third graders. The other one would be the new junior high school, which would be built behind where the current one is. Currently, at the junior high, many students use portable classrooms in the back as learning spaces. Some teachers are cutting classrooms in half with temporary walls.
If the referendum doesn’t pass in November, the superintendent said they will have to add more portable classrooms instead. In 2022, voters rejected the referendum to expand and build new schools.
