CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Sam Banks has resigned from his position on the Unit 4 School Board, ending his six-month tenure. Banks, appointed in June after the resignations of Jamar Brown and Mark Thies, informed the board of his decision in a letter Sunday night.
In his resignation letter, Banks explained that a family situation required his attention, and given the dynamics of the board, he felt he could not contribute effectively.
Banks echoed sentiments voiced by Brown and Thies in their own resignations, stating, “In addition to a challenging personal situation which requires my attention, it has become apparent to me that there is minimal possibility for any success and positive influence or success on impacting the unproductive dynamics between board members and the manner in which the board functions.” He went on to express regret that he was unable to make a meaningful impact, adding, “My hope in coming on the board was to assist with moving forward with productive board operations and engagement.”
Board President Gianina Baker thanked Banks for his service, acknowledging his efforts in contributing to the board during a difficult time. “We thank Sam for stepping up to serve on the Board of Education and for his many years of service to the Champaign community,” Baker said in a statement.
With Banks’ resignation, the board now has only six members. The Unit 4 School Board will discuss the process for filling the vacancy at its next meeting, including setting an application timeline. According to district policy, the board has 60 days to appoint a new member. If the board is unable to make an appointment, as happened earlier this year, the decision will fall to regional superintendent Gary Lewis.
In the April 2025 election, three board members, including Baker, Vice President Heather Vazquez, and Bruce Brown, will not seek re-election. Mark Holm, also appointed in June, is among the 11 candidates running for five open seats on the April ballot.
