(URBANA, IL) – Cheese, a Pekin duck, had a rough start in life. Abandoned around Easter last year at a retention basin, she was malnourished, over-mated, and struggling to survive. An Urbana resident stepped in to rescue her, and after a long journey, Cheese finally found a safe, loving home.
However, despite their best efforts to protect her, tragedy struck when a hawk broke into her run and attacked her, leaving a deep wound on her back. The emergency treatment for her wound cost $1,200, but she will require subsequent bandage changes every 3-4 days for the next 3 weeks, with each visit costing $400. Cheese’s owner, Collette Montague, says Cheese is improving, but requires ongoing care. “Bandaging is looking good so far, with no sign of excess bleeding or infection. She is on antibiotics and painkillers, but she’s got the company of her best friend, Quakers, to speed her along in her recovery.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for Cheese. Additionally, any funds raised beyond the goal will go towards fortifying the enclosure to prevent further incidents and for her ongoing checkups.
