CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) has unveiled a new initiative aimed at helping low- and extremely low-income homeowners make necessary repairs to their homes. The Home Repair and Accessibility Program (HRAP) will provide $16 million in grant funding to local governments and nonprofit organizations, which will then distribute funds to eligible homeowners for health, safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency improvements.
IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust emphasized the importance of the program, particularly for vulnerable populations. “Many homeowners are forced to prioritize their spending, causing them to delay vital and necessary home repairs,” Faust said. “It is imperative that our low-income and aging populations live in healthy, stable housing. I encourage local governments and nonprofit organizations to apply for HRAP so they can provide this vital assistance to help vulnerable homeowners in their communities.”
The average single-family home in Illinois, according to the U.S. Census, was built in 1972, meaning many homes are in need of substantial upgrades. HRAP is designed to help preserve affordable housing, improve health and safety conditions, and assist seniors and individuals with disabilities in staying in their homes.
Local governments and qualified nonprofit organizations interested in administering this program must meet several criteria, including experience in managing programs for low-income households, housing rehabilitation, and construction project management. Applications for the program will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. on March 14. For more details and to apply, visit the IHDA website.
