City of Urbana kicks off the third annual Trees and Lights from Around the World 

TLAW will kick off with a Mayoral ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, December 7 at noon at the northeast corner of Main and Race Street. The even will continue throughout the holiday season to celebrate Urbana’s rich culture and diversity as well as promoting small businesses.

Champaign Police provide their winter driving tips for dangerous road weather

The CPD encourages drivers to slow down and take their time when moving throughout the Champaign. The slippery conditions make the braking time necessary to stop a vehicle significantly increased. So far, over 20 vehicle crashes have been reported in Champaign and few have even resulted in transport to area hospitals and tows.

UPD announces Sergeant Jared Hurley as Employee of the Month

His leadership was dearly appreciated and allowed the ISP and local agencies to support their officers and Trooper Thompsen’s family. On top of this, Sgt. Hurley also hones his skills as a Master Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer, Taser Instructor, METRO SWAT Operator, and Honor Guard Member. He sets a standard for others to follow and strengthens the department altogether.

The City of Champaign is offering free two-hour parking downtown

There is no requirement to provide any proof of purchase at the parking deck to receive the two-hour discount. Parking at the parking deck is also free on City holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The parking deck is located at the corner of Hill and Randolph Streets and has more than 300 visitor parking spaces.

She initially came to the Champaign County Humane Society (CCHS) as a transfer from the local Animal Control facility. She was initially found as a stray kitten along with her siblings. She was adopted out, but, unfortunately, she was found as a stray afterwards.

CFD responds to apartment fire started by unattended kitchen appliance

An apartment building on fire was reported by a passerby on Monday, November 25. The CFD responded by sending out firefighters at 12:56 p.m. and deployed a single hose line into an apartment. Fortunately, the fire crews were able to get the fire under control in time. The cause of the fire was attributed to a kitchen appliance and was entirely accidental.

American Red Cross provides heating safety tips

“Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in this country,” said Rodrigo Carrillo, Regional Disaster Officer for the Illinois Red Cross. “But, there are steps people can take to avoid having this happen to them. Help keep your family safe by providing at least three feet of space around all heating equipment, testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your two-minute home fire escape plan.”
