This includes 4-H, Family Life, Nutrition and Wellness, Finance, SNAP-Ed, Integrated Health Disparities, Master Gardeners, and Master Naturalists. Community partners including Champaign Park District, the Housing Authority of Champaign County, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, OSF Healthcare, and the Trauma and Resilience Initiative will be onsite.
The Smoke Alarm Blitz begins on Saturday, May 3 at 8:00 a.m. includes approximately 100 homes within the boundaries of Prospect Avenue to the west, Harris Avenue to the east, Bradley Avenue to the north, and the railroad to the south. Firefighters and staff from the Champaign Fire Department, Neighborhood Services Department and Equity and Engagement Department, along with volunteers from the Christian Sheehan Smoke Alarm Blitz and the American Red Cross will be collaborating to check and install smoke alarms.

Trained personnel will test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors within residents’ homes. Homes lacking these devices will be provided new detectors, free of charge. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring that vulnerable households have the necessary early warning systems in place.
“No child should ever have to wonder where their next meal will come from — not during the school year and not during the summer. With the Summer EBT program, Illinois is ensuring our most vulnerable children have access to the nutritious meals they need to thrive,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “After becoming one of the first states to successfully launch this assistance program last summer, we’re proud to continue investing in the well-being of our children and families.”

In Urbana, the the unemployment rate fell from 3.2 from 4.5 percent. Total nonfarm employment in the Champaign-Urbana area increased by 2,300 jobs year-over-year, reaching 122,900 jobs in March 2025.
The trustees recognized April 2025 as Community College Month, which supports the awareness of the benefits of community colleges. It is part of a national campaign by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The primary goal, according to ACCT, is to “improve awareness of the economic, academic, and equity advantages of attending community colleges, and to dispel longtime stigmas wrongly associated with public two-year colleges.”
