CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A 16-year-old boy is dead and another remains in critical condition after a shooting early Sunday morning in Champaign.
Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer confirmed the identity of the deceased as Erion Turner, 16, of Champaign. Turner was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital’s Emergency Department in Urbana shortly after midnight.
Champaign Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at 12:01 a.m. near Holly Hill Drive and Garden Hills Drive. Upon arrival, they found two unconscious teenage boys suffering from what authorities described as “potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds” in a front yard.
Emergency responders administered aid at the scene before both teens were transported to the hospital. Tragically, Turner succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, also 16, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
An autopsy for Turner is scheduled, and an investigation is underway by the Champaign Police Department and Champaign County Coroner’s Office. No arrests have been made as of Sunday morning.

Police are also requesting that residents or businesses with surveillance footage from the area come forward to aid in the investigation.
