CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Police Department (CPD) responded to a late-night call from a local hotel where officers discovered the victim of a gunshot wound.

CPD reports that officers were dispatched to a hotel located in the 900 block of W. Bloomington Road on Wednesday, June 5, at approximately 11:28 p.m. following a report of a shooting incident. Upon arrival, officers say they discovered a 34-year-old male from Tolono suffering from a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound to the chest. Despite the severity of his injuries, they say that man was conscious and alert. Officers, along with personnel from the Champaign Fire Department, say they immediately administered medical aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital. As of now, CPD says that he remains hospitalized in stable condition.

They say that preliminary investigations reveal that the victim was visiting an acquaintance at the hotel when an unidentified assailant approached and robbed him and another guest of their belongings. During the course of the robbery, they say a shot was fired, striking the victim and that the perpetrator then fled the scene.

CPD says that law enforcement officers are actively canvassing the surrounding area, seeking witnesses and video footage that could aid in the investigation. They are asking residents and businesses in the vicinity with exterior surveillance cameras to contact the police department. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing, they say. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
