CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Back-to-school shopping is set to be the most expensive it’s been in years, according to a new report from Savings.com. Families are expected to spend an average of $628 per child, up 4% from last year, on everything from clothing to classroom tech.

The study, authored by Beth Klongpayabal, found that 71% of parents plan to spend more this year, with high schoolers racking up the highest costs—nearly $800 per student. Clothing tops the list of biggest expenses, followed by electronics and traditional school supplies.

Adding to financial stress, 72% of parents say they’re cutting costs elsewhere or taking on side gigs to afford this year’s expenses, a sharp increase from 56% in 2024. Klongpayabal notes that tariffs are also a growing concern, with 7-in-10 parents worried they’ll drive prices even higher.

Still, families are finding ways to save. 84% of parents plan to shop during their state’s tax-free holidays—a strategy available in 17 states, including Illinois.
