CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) – What began as one woman’s personal passion for music and entrepreneurship has grown into a movement empowering the next generation of young women in Central Illinois.
DJ Silkee—known off the turntables as Janaea Modest—is celebrating the fifth year of her She Spins DJ Camp, a free, weeklong program in Urbana that teaches girls ages 10 to 17 the art of DJing and the power of self-expression. The camp is open to girls aged 10 to 17, and it’s completely free, including dinner each night. Two sessions are scheduled: alumni from past camps meet September 8–12, and new students train from September 15–18, leading into the showcase.
“I just didn’t want the kids to experience what I did starting out,” said Modest during a recent appearance on the public affairs show Focus. “People didn’t take me seriously. Now I get to create a space where young women feel seen, safe, and supported.”

Backed by the Urbana Arts & Culture Program, She Spins offers hands-on experience with real DJ gear, performance training, and community-building exercises. But it goes beyond the booth—campers walk away with confidence, communication skills, and a stronger sense of self.
She Spins Urbana DJ Camp Schedule:
-
Sept. 8–12: Alumni Session
-
Sept. 15–18: Beginner Session
Modest says the program’s impact continues long after the turntables are packed up. Some alumni now DJ at college events, run their own businesses, and are thriving academically.
“They learn so much more than music—” she said, “they learn how to speak up, support one another, and lead.” Held in Urbana and supported by the Urbana Arts & Culture Program, She Spins provides hands-on experience with real DJ equipment, teaches performance skills, and—perhaps most importantly—fosters community.
Each camp ends with a public showcase. This year’s performance will take place on September 19 at Gallery Art Bar from 6-8 p.m., featuring live DJ sets from the students and youth-run vendor booths—a celebration of artistry and entrepreneurship rolled into one.
Participants also gain real-world confidence and communication skills. DJ Silkee shared stories of past campers now spinning at college parties, running their own DJ businesses, and excelling academically. “They learn so much more than music—they learn how to speak up, support one another, and lead.”
