URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — More than 850 University of Illinois students packed the Illini Union on May 5 for a live event featuring internet personality and content creator Mathew Patrick, better known online as “MatPat.”
Emcee Magaly Marin, the Director of Enriching Programs, explored the rise of MatPat’s long-running YouTube franchise “The Game Theorists” and the evolving landscape of digital media, entertainment, and online business. The event also included a live panel interview and meet-and-greet session with fans.
Six security guards, three reporters, and 10 photographers attended the event as students filled the venue to hear MatPat discuss the creative process behind building one of YouTube’s most recognizable theory channels.
Throughout the interview, MatPat explained how theories are developed from initial concepts into fully produced episodes. He described the research, scripting, editing, and collaboration involved in creating content that balances entertainment with analysis.

The discussion also focused on how online media continues to change. MatPat spoke about adapting to shifting audience expectations, platform algorithms, and the growing influence of digital creators in entertainment and business spaces.
According to organizers, the event aimed to celebrate the community that has supported the channel for the past 13 years while giving students an opportunity to engage directly with a major figure in online media.
MatPat is currently touring college campuses across the United States, using the events to discuss the future of media while connecting with student audiences in a more personal and interactive setting.
Students attending the event responded enthusiastically throughout the night, especially during the live Q&A and meet-and-greet portions of the program. Many attendees stayed after the panel for photos, conversations, and autographs.
