CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The tornado risk across Central Illinois has increased sharply, with forecasters now rating the threat at 9 out of 10. Meteorologists say a significant tornado event is likely, particularly in the northern part of the region, where an intense or potential tornado cannot be ruled out.

Storm activity is expected to begin after 3 p.m., with severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. Authorities urge residents to remain weather-aware, review their tornado safety plans, and be prepared to take shelter immediately if warnings are issued.

Officials advise staying informed through local media, weather radios, and mobile alerts, and remind drivers to avoid flooded roads, as even shallow water can sweep vehicles away.

“Be weather aware,” the National Weather Service cautioned. “A dangerous tornado event appears probable across parts of Central Illinois today.”
