CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Fire Department hosted a heartfelt retirement reception for Fire Chief Andy Quarnstrom at Station 1 earlier today. The event brought together members of the Champaign City Council, fire department personnel, and city staff to celebrate Quarnstrom’s nearly three decades of dedicated public service.

Chief Quarnstrom, who began his career with the department in 1997, rose through the ranks—from firefighter to engineer, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, acting deputy chief, and finally Fire Chief. His retirement marks the culmination of a remarkable journey defined by resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to public safety.

Champaign City Manager Joan Walls reflected on his service. “Chief Quarnstrom has been an innovative leader, a decisive voice in times of crisis, and a resilient force in shaping a safer Champaign. His legacy will be felt for years to come.”

Andy’s leadership extended far beyond emergency response. He championed initiatives like the CU@Work Program, which offered employment to unhoused individuals, and supported the opening of Strides Homeless Shelter—a low-barrier, year-round facility for men and women. His experience as a township supervisor further shaped his people-centered approach to leadership.

Chief Quarnstrom reflected on his career. “I never imagined that one day I’d be leading this department. It’s been an incredible opportunity. But I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without the unwavering support of my fellow firefighters, my mentors, and most importantly, my family.”

Andy, a Champaign resident, shares his life with his wife and two children. Despite the demands of leading a fire department, he balanced his responsibilities at home and at work with remarkable grace.

As the department moves into a new chapter, Chief Quarnstrom leaves behind a culture of excellence, a commitment to community, and a blueprint for success. “I look at the City of Champaign Fire Department and I can’t think of a better place to be the Fire Chief,” he said. “I’m proud of our staff and the work they do—it’s truly been an honor to lead this team.”
