CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – This year’s Champaign County Freedom Celebration will be more inclusive than ever, thanks to a new sensory-friendly activity sponsored by the City’s Equity and Engagement Department. As part of its ongoing mission to foster equity and inclusion in public spaces, the department has partnered with That Kid Place, a mobile sensory museum, to create a welcoming environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism and other disabilities.

The specially designed activity area will offer a calm, supportive space during the celebration, ensuring that all residents—regardless of ability—can take part in the festivities. That Kid Place, known for its interactive and soothing setups, brings a unique experience to children and adults who may find large crowds and loud noises overwhelming.

The sensory-friendly zone is part of a broader effort by the City of Champaign to create equitable experiences throughout the year. It marks another step forward in recognizing the diverse needs of residents and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in civic life.

For more information about accessibility at city-sponsored events, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Champaign’s website or contact the Equity and Engagement Department directly.
