CHAMPAIGN, IL — The Champaign Fire Department and local community are mourning the unexpected off-duty passing of Firefighter Trace Conover, who died on July 9.
Trace Conover served the city of Champaign with distinction for over three and a half years, remembered by his colleagues not only for his professionalism and bravery, but also for his compassion and unwavering commitment to service.
Beyond his frontline duties, Conover played an active role in supporting his fellow firefighters and the broader community. He served on the board of the Champaign Firefighters Benevolent Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring firefighters and giving back to local community groups. He also recently joined the Champaign Fire Department Peer Support Team, where he offered emotional and mental health support to his peers.
“Trace was the kind of firefighter every department hopes for,” said a fellow CFD member. “He showed up every day with heart, humility, and a willingness to serve others.”
The Champaign Fire Department has extended its deepest condolences to the Conover family and all those grieving his loss.
Plans for services and memorials will be shared by the department as they become available. In the meantime, the fire community reflects on the legacy of a man who gave his all in service of others.
