CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — On Sunday, the Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a 12-unit multi-family apartment building in the 2400 block of High View Court at around 4:08 p.m.
Fire crews rescued nine occupants from the fire.
Firefighters responded to multiple reports of a fire in the three-story apartment building, and saw heavy smoke while en route. The fire was then upgraded to a second alarm. Once on the scene, firefighters reported heavy fire coming from both a second and third floor balcony. Crews located eight occupants on adjacent balconies and performed ladder rescues while multiple hose lines were extended to fight the fire. A ninth occupant and dog were rescued from within an apartment. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, and investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. One occupant was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. There were no firefighter injuries reported.
