CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Crews with the Champaign Fire Department responded late Monday night to a fire that broke out behind Sam’s Club on North Prospect Avenue.
Firefighters arrived at the scene around 11:15 p.m. and found multiple cardboard bales ablaze. At least five fire trucks responded, and crews remained on site until approximately 1:15 a.m. to fully extinguish the fire. The Champaign Public Works Department assisted by providing a backhoe to help open the tightly packed bales and ensure the fire was completely out.
The blaze was initially reported by a passerby who noticed the flames and alerted authorities. As of Tuesday afternoon, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to fire officials.
No injuries were reported, and the fire did not reach the main building.
