CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The two Champaign shooting victims were identified by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office (CCCO).

The CCCO has confirmed that the 18-year-old male victim was George Dorris-Rodgers, and the female victim, also 18-years-old, was Daniyjah Staple. The CCCO says that they were both pronounced dead at shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, July 28, at the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department in Urbana, Illinois.

Original story published Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 1:48 p.m.: Two people are dead after reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Cynthia Dr. overnight.

The Champaign Police Department (CPD) reported that officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 12:34 a.m. on Sunday, July 28. Upon arrival, they found several individuals with gunshot wounds. Officers, along with Champaign Fire Department personnel, provided immediate medical assistance until the victims could be taken to a hospital.

Shortly after, a victim was brought to a local hospital by private vehicle, prompting officers to be sent to conduct interviews. The victims included an 18-year-old male with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the chest and an 18-year-old female with life-threatening gunshot wounds to her leg and torso. CPD says that both were taken to the hospital where they later died from their injuries. Also injured were a 25-year-old female with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her arm and a 15-year-old male with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. They were last reported in stable condition at the hospital.

CPD says the primary investigation shows that a group of people were in the parking lot of an apartment building on Cynthia Dr. when one or more unknown individuals used guns and started shooting. They say that four people were hit by the gunfire. A vehicle was also damaged. No one has been arrested yet for this incident.
