CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department is inviting the public to take part in a series of events during National Police Week, observed May 12–18, to honor fallen officers, recognize staff achievements, and foster community connection.

Highlights include the return of the CPD Open House on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 82 E University Ave. Visitors can tour the facility, interact with officers, view CPD vehicles, and enjoy live demonstrations from specialized units including SWAT and Crime Scene Investigations. The event promises a family-friendly environment aimed at educating the public about local law enforcement.

“Police Week allows all of us the chance to pause and reflect on the work we do and the incredible teammates who do it,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “We’re excited to offer the community an inside look at their police department.”

On Tuesday, May 13, at 9 a.m., the Police Memorial Ceremony will take place at West Side Park to honor officers worldwide who have died in the line of duty. The Champaign Police will pay tribute to Officers Thomas Dodsworth, Robert Tatman, and Christopher Oberheim, who each made the ultimate sacrifice serving the community.

The department will also host its Employee Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. at CPD headquarters. The event will recognize exceptional performance from both sworn and civilian staff, with honors such as Officer of the Year and Employee of the Year.

National Police Week has been recognized annually since 1962, coinciding with Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. All events are free and open to the public, and Champaign Police encourage community members to participate.
