CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department (CPD) was on hand for an informal and engaging “Coffee With a Cop” event at the Mad Goat coffee shop in Champaign. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen relationships between officers and residents by providing an opportunity for open dialogue in a relaxed environment. From 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. this morning, community members enjoyed a cup of coffee, and asked questions or voiced any concerns directly to the officers who serve their neighborhood.

Deputy Chief of Administration Kevin Olmstead said this type of dialogue is more important than ever. “This is a wonderful opportunity to bridge the gap between our officers and the community. By engaging directly with residents in a casual setting, we can build stronger trust and work together to create a safer, more connected Champaign.”

More than a dozen members of the Champaign Police Department were on hand to interact with the community. Olmstead said the main issues they keep hearing about from the public haven’t changed. “Traffic is the number one thing people want addressed. Safer drivers, more respectful and responsible drivers. Slow down. Stop at stop signs. It’s that simple. He also said, while crime stats are down in the area, that issue remains top of mind. “People are always concerned with community safety. We work hard every day to make every single resident feel safe and protected in their own homes – and when they are anywhere in Champaign.”

Members of the Champaign Police Department – from the Deputy Chief to the Chief Information Officer to Lieutenants and patrol officers were on hand to participate in this important event.
