CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Champaign Police Department (CPD) conducted a traffic safety campaign to ensure that everyone traveled safely around the Thanksgiving holiday.
The enforcement effort ran from November 21 through December 2, 2025. It was conducted by CPD in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort to increase safety on the roads ahead of an increase in travel for the holiday season.
During the campaign, CPD committed officers to 13 hours of grant-funded enforcement with a focus on arterial routes, especially in areas that impact neighborhoods. This was in addition to routine proactivity from on-duty officers. The enforcement campaign resulted in:
- 8 citations for speeding
- 3 citations for moving violations
- 2 citations for expired registration
- 2 citations for distracted driving related to mobile phone use
- 1 citation for driving without insurance
- 1 citation for driving without a valid license
- 1 citation for child car seat infractions
The traffic safety campaign was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office also announced the results of its enforcement earlier this week.
