Champaign, IL (Chambana Today) – A fatal shooting on Monday evening has prompted a homicide investigation by Champaign police.

Officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of West Springfield Ave. at approximately 7:50 p.m. on December 9, following reports of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, police found a 21-year-old woman suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency medical aid was provided by officers and Champaign Fire Department personnel before the victim was transported to a local hospital. She succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim and a man had entered a nearby business when an unidentified suspect opened fire. The woman was struck multiple times, while the man was unharmed. The suspect fled the scene on foot. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

Police are actively canvassing the area for witnesses and seeking video footage from nearby residents or businesses with exterior surveillance systems that might aid the investigation.
