CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The intruder of a Champaign home invasion has been identified as Emmanuel Becerril-Perez, 21, of Urbana. The Champaign County Coroner said Mr. Becerril-Perez was pronounced dead at 5:43 a.m. this morning. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

Champaign Police were called at 4:09 a.m. this morning with a report of a home invasion with gunfire. On-scene, in the 1200 block of Harrington Drive, officers located two injured men and immediately began to administer emergency aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department. The resident of the home had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and remains in stable condition. The other subject, who was not a resident of the home, had been mortally wounded and died at the scene.

The initial investigation indicates that a homeowner engaged in a physical altercation with the subject who had entered the home. In the struggle, the homeowner fired multiple shots. The intruder was mortally wounded, and the homeowner was injured in the discharge of the weapon.

Champaign Police remain in the area to investigate this incident. Any resident or business nearby with exterior surveillance cameras is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
