CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – After reaching a recent financial settlement, the Champaign Unit 4 School District is set to undergo a thorough audit of its special education programs. This evaluation aims to identify areas for improvement and ensure that all students receive the support they need.

The audit will be conducted by Dan Cates, a former superintendent with expertise in special education. Attorney Neil Takkif will oversee the process to ensure that all procedures are transparent and thorough.

The decision to launch this audit came during a special meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday night. The board approved the settlement authorizing the audit with four members voting in favor and three abstaining.

Board member Betsy Holder wrote on Facebook, “Thank you to the families and advocates who have tirelessly sacrificed for these students and who have been the voices for those who cannot speak for themselves. Change won’t happen overnight, but we are finally on the right path. Taking accountability and moving forward as a district and community to best serve our most marginalized children is paramount.”

The audit represents a significant step toward improving the quality and transparency of Champaign’s special education programs. Parents and educators are hopeful that this comprehensive review will lead to positive changes and better outcomes for special education students in the district.
