CHAMPAIGN, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY)- Students from several schools in the Urbana and Champaign area will be biking and rolling to school along with parents, teachers, and community leaders on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Bike to School Day, celebrated annually in May, encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for students and builds on the popularity and success of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Bike to School events work to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of a range of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, cyclist and pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment, and building connections between families, schools, and the broader community.
Bike & Roll to School Day kicks off National Bike Month during which local organizations will be leading bike rides such as the Ride of Silence, hosting a booth at the Urbana Market at the Square on Saturday mornings, and promoting safe and fun bicycling for everyone.
The event is organized by the C-U Safe Routes to School Project, the City of Champaign, Champaign County Bikes, and the City of Urbana with support from the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD).
