CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Mayor Deb Frank Feinen released a statement after incendiary comments were made last week by City Council member Davion Williams:
“This past Tuesday night (December 17th) during our City Council Meeting, several hurtful statements were directed toward members of our community. The City of Champaign has a long history of diversity and inclusion and proudly stands as a Welcoming City. The language used during the meeting does not reflect the values of our community nor the City organization.
As elected officials we are called to work with and listen to those on all sides of an issue, even if we disagree. However, there is a vast distinction between a difference of opinion and comments that are anti-Palestinian and anti-Semitic. As Mayor, I condemn this type of rhetoric in the strongest of possible terms.
In our democracy, expressing opinions should create a safe space to learn about varying viewpoints and ideas. This, however, is only possible when the conversations are rooted in civility. The action of “othering” members of our community and making statements that leave individuals feeling unsafe or unwelcome is never acceptable. We cannot move forward as a community and work together to solve issues unless we listen to one another, respect one another, and continue to build trust.
As Mayor I want all members of our community to know that they are welcome here in Champaign and that we stand in solidarity against hate and intolerance. It is our differences that make us stronger and weave the inclusive, vibrant and rich tapestry of our community life together. I encourage our residents to continue to foster the type of community we all want to live in, and I applaud those who embrace our community’s diversity and show respect for one another even, when they disagree over issues. May we all learn from their example. I want everyone in Champaign to know they are welcome here and to feel at home.”
