CHICAGO, IL (Chambana Today) – Cardinal Robert Prevost was born in a suburb of Chicago. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history. The news has sparked celebration across Illinois, with public officials and Catholic institutions alike expressing pride and joy.

The Archdiocese of Chicago declared, “Glory be to God!” while, in a statement, Gov. JB Pritzker called the moment historic, welcoming a new era of compassion and unity. U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly noted that Pope Leo XIV grew up in Dolton, right in her district. Prevost once taught in the Diocese of Joliet and St. Rita Academy.

Known for his centrist views—progressive on many social issues but traditional in church doctrine—Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue Francis’ legacy of outreach to marginalized communities.
