CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The City of Champaign has announced the appointment of Christopher Walton as its new Deputy City Manager, effective June 2. The announcement was made Wednesday by City Manager Joan Walls, who cited Walton’s extensive municipal government experience and his strong leadership qualities as key factors in the decision.

Walton brings more than a decade of public service experience to the role. He currently serves as Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Savoy, where he leads key initiatives in budgeting, funding acquisition, economic development, human resources compliance, and intergovernmental affairs.

This will mark Walton’s return to the City of Champaign, where he previously worked from 2018 to 2020 as Assistant to the City Manager. His career also includes roles with DuPage County and the Village of Lake Villa, both in Illinois.

“Christopher’s well-rounded experience in municipal government, his passion for the Champaign community, and his creativity and innovation made him the clear choice,” said Walls. “He is a true servant leader and will be a great asset to the City and our community.”

In response to his appointment, Walton said he is honored to rejoin the City of Champaign in a leadership role. “I am humbled by the City Manager’s confidence in me,” he said. “I look forward to working with the City’s professional and dedicated staff to continue delivering responsible and ethical government services.”

Walton holds a Master of Arts in Policy and Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Management from National Louis University. He is also active in professional associations, serving as President of the Downstate Illinois City/County Management Association and a board member of the Illinois City/County Management Association.
