CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, two local organizations, First Followers and H3 Harm, Healing, and Hope, have teamed up to host their impactful “Shine the Block” event. The initiative, which focuses on beautification, education, and advocacy, has brought together local residents, organizations, and volunteers to improve neighborhoods and foster a spirit of collaboration and support.

This year’s efforts began with a community cleanup in Oakwood Trace, where volunteers from a wide range of organizations—including the Champaign Police, Dream, Casa, and Business Elevators—helped revitalize the area through yard work, maintenance, and cleanups. The event also featured the distribution of school supplies and personal care products to local children, emphasizing the holistic approach the event takes toward addressing both physical and social needs in the community.

At the heart of “Shine the Block” is a mission to build stronger, more peaceful communities by addressing the challenges faced by individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. Through their partnership, First Followers, a re-entry program led by Executive Director, Dr. Marlon Mitchell, and H3, a grassroots organization focused on healing from violence, poverty, and injustice, are changing the narrative on community empowerment.

Osajuli Cravens, Director of Administration for H3, highlighted the event’s focus on communication, collaboration, and motivation, stating, “With the right approach, we can all make a difference. It’s about meeting people where they are, not just asking them to come to us.”

The next Shine the Block event is scheduled for November 7th at Country Brook Apartments in Champaign. Organizers encourage everyone to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply showing up to help neighbors in need. With a focus on community education, the event will also provide valuable information on local resources, including food assistance programs and volunteer opportunities.

As Dr. Mitchell emphasized, “We need each other now more than ever. Together, we can truly shine the block.”
