CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – In recognition of World Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) is launching its latest period product drive to support individuals facing period poverty in Champaign County. Beginning May 5, 2025, the campaign will collect essential menstrual hygiene products for distribution to those in need.
Last year alone, CUPHD distributed 10,881 individual period products to community members who struggle to afford these vital healthcare items. The initiative is part of a broader effort to raise awareness and combat period poverty, a widespread yet often overlooked public health issue.
According to the Alliance for Period Supplies, 40% of menstruating individuals in the U.S. have faced challenges affording period products due to financial hardship. Among students, one in four have lacked access to the supplies they need, impacting their health, dignity, and ability to fully participate in daily life.
Donations can be made virtually through a curated Amazon Wish List, with items shipped directly to CUPHD. In-person donations will be accepted from May 26 to 30 at CUPHD’s main office (201 W. Kenyon Rd., Champaign), where a drop box will be located in the lobby during regular business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.).
Join the effort to ensure that period products are accessible to all and help raise awareness around menstrual hygiene on May 28. For more information, visit allianceforperiodsupplies.org.
