DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – Fire crews from the Danville Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire late Friday night, August 1, in a vacant two-story commercial building owned by the City of Danville.
The call came in at approximately 10:13 p.m., with Engine 1 arriving first on scene to find heavy fire on the second floor and visible flames pouring from four windows. Given the size of the structure and intensity of the fire, a second alarm was immediately requested to bring in additional resources.
Crews reported that the fire was primarily confined to the front third of the second floor and attic space, with heavy smoke conditions throughout. All firefighting efforts were defensive for much of the response, as flames were visible behind multiple windows and structural stability was a concern.
Utility provider Ameren Illinois responded to the scene and confirmed that gas and electricity had been previously disconnected, ensuring firefighter safety during the operation.
After the exterior fire was knocked down, firefighters entered to assess internal conditions. Crews discovered light smoke and approximately one foot of water accumulation on the second floor. Importantly, the fire had not spread to the rear of the building, allowing for a more controlled interior response. Final extinguishment was achieved through a coordinated effort between interior crews and aerial operations.
The Danville Fire Department has initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and no working smoke detectors were found inside the structure.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries, and the estimated dollar loss is currently listed at $41,000.
